Last
week the REFLEX saw two stories of success. Whereas H &
Claire self-combusted in a pop parody of themselves, Lee ‘starred’
as the Teen Angel in Grease and Faye got a touch of the Pavarottis
before skulking away, Lisa Scott-Lee waited. She waited
for the right track to come along, she underwent a Kylie-esque
metamorphosis, and reappeared last weekend as a sultry, sexy pop star
with a cracking slice of pop to call her own. She was also the special
guest for The Reflex's 11th birthday celebrations, an evening oozing
with pop, commercial beats and more balloons that you could pop.
Taking to the stage and giving resident DJ Freckles a
break, she sang two tracks, the first a rousing disco cover, and the
second her self-penned new release ‘Lately’. ‘It's great to be
here,’ she shouted between songs, much to the delight of the gathered
masses. We caught up with her later backstage, when she told us how she
was feeling after her performance. ‘I'm glad to be pursuing my solo
career,’ she told us, ‘and it's great to concentrate on my own
music. I'm also really pleased people have turned up this evening. It's
great to see their reactions, something you can't really see in bigger
venues.’
A few scene faces were also there to catch Lisa. Upstairs afterwards,
surrounded by an entourage, was crooner Jason Prince, who
didn't say much but gave the thumbs up to us when we said hello. The
upstairs Roman themed bar area was busy, perhaps with people taking a
break from the huge birthday bash going on below. The balloons outside
the venue were certainly enticing people in, and with the calibre of
music, the great PA and such a fab atmosphere, it's not surprising that
many punters still had to be kicked out when time was called. It was a
very happy birthday indeed.
